Arelion successfully completed a live field trial on its Chicago-to-Denver route using Cisco 400G Ultra Long Haul (ULH) QSFP-DD pluggable coherent optical modules and Cisco 8000 series routers powered by Cisco Silicon One. The test achieved IP transmission over 2,253 kilometers at a spectrum of 112.5 GHz, delivering improved cost efficiency and extended reach compared to traditional transponders. Arelion reported a 35% reduction in CAPEX and an 84% decrease in OPEX when expanding its network.
Cisco’s 400G ULH pluggable modules, featuring greater than +1 dBm transmit power, streamline network architecture by reducing the amount of hardware required for long-haul optical connections. The successful trial positions Arelion to enhance its Routed Optical Networking capabilities in North America, particularly in challenging geographies, to support growing demand for AI, ML, and cloud applications. The technology also improves cost-efficiency and scalability for wholesale and enterprise customers.
The deployment allows Arelion to expand its global IP backbone and connectivity services portfolio, offering scalable solutions such as IP Transit, Wavelengths, Dedicated Internet Access (DIA), Cloud Connect, and DDoS Mitigation. With these advancements, Arelion aims to strengthen its role as a key connectivity provider for service providers, content platforms, and enterprises across North America.
