Applied Optoelectronics (AOI) is demonstrating its 100G VCSEL-based 800G OSFP 2xSR4 multimode optical transceiver at ECOC 2025 in Copenhagen. The solution leverages AOI’s vertically integrated design and manufacturing to deliver cost-efficient, low-power optics for hyperscale and AI data centers.
AOI’s 100G VCSELs, operating at 850 nm, are designed for short-reach connections of under 100 meters, the most common link type in large-scale AI and machine learning clusters. By embedding these VCSELs into its 800G OSFP 2xSR4, AOI aims to provide an efficient upgrade path for next-generation multimode infrastructure. The company is also showcasing its broader portfolio, including 1.6T and 800G optical solutions, as well as its next-generation high-power ELSFP 1311 nm product.
Visitors to ECOC can view live demonstrations of the 800G VCSEL-based transceiver at AOI’s booth, highlighting how vertical integration can help hyperscalers and OEMs manage supply chain security while maintaining performance and energy efficiency.
• 100G VCSELs at 850 nm optimized for <100m short-reach links
• 800G OSFP 2xSR4 multimode transceiver for hyperscale and AI clusters
• Vertically integrated manufacturing for secure, differentiated supply
• Portfolio expansion to 1.6T/800G optics and high-power ELSFP 1311 nm solutions
• Live demonstrations at ECOC 2025 booth #C3406
“Our ability to produce 100G VCSELs ensures that AOI can deliver differentiated performance and secure supply for hyperscale and AI customers,” said Fred Chang, Senior Vice President and North American General Manager at AOI.
🌐 Analysis: VCSEL-based multimode optics continue to hold a strong position for short-reach connectivity in hyperscale data centers, despite the industry’s rapid adoption of single-mode solutions for longer AI cluster interconnects. AOI’s 800G OSFP 2xSR4 reinforces the relevance of multimode as a cost-efficient, energy-saving option where distance requirements remain modest. With competitors such as Coherent, Lumentum, and Innolight pushing into 1.6T single-mode designs, AOI’s strategy underscores the balance between performance, power, and supply assurance in short-reach deployments.
