Ericsson, Qualcomm, and Thales Validate 5G NTN Satellite Connectivity

Ericsson, Qualcomm Technologies, and Thales Alenia Space have achieved a major breakthrough in satellite-based 5G connectivity, successfully completing a 5G non-terrestrial network (NTN) call using a simulated low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite. This milestone proves that a 5G NTN-capable device can maintain mobile coverage even in remote areas where terrestrial networks are unavailable. The test, conducted in a lab setting, demonstrated that mobile users could seamlessly connect across vast regions, such as oceans and forests, without needing additional satellite signal-receiving equipment.

The trial validated critical technical functionalities, including handling transmission delays, Doppler effects, and satellite handovers, which are essential for ensuring smooth communication in satellite environments. This successful demonstration paves the way for real-time applications such as high-definition voice calls and video streaming via NTN. The collaboration, launched in 2022, was the first publicly announced initiative to implement 5G NTN based on 3GPP standards, setting a foundation for the commercial deployment of satellite-supported mobile networks.

Ericsson, Qualcomm, and Thales Alenia Space plan to further refine NTN technologies for both 5G and future 6G networks. Their goal is to enable a full range of mobile services, from messaging and voice to high-speed data connectivity through multi-orbit satellite systems. This progress marks a significant step toward a future where 5G connectivity is accessible globally, bridging the digital divide and supporting seamless mobile communication regardless of location.
