The Gaia-X development project Tellus, led by DE-CIX, is moving past its early implementation phase, delivering a prototype interconnection infrastructure for fully automated, virtual access to networks in distributed cloud environments. The Tellus project integrates offerings from various providers to create a seamless, decentralized data ecosystem, positioning itself as a cornerstone of the Gaia-X vision for a secure and collaborative data economy. This milestone introduces significant advancements for real-time, business-critical applications in areas such as Industry 4.0, healthcare, and smart living.
Tellus addresses challenges in implementing distributed cloud systems by automating and integrating interconnection services through its innovative Super Node and decentralized Tellus Node architecture. The Super Node acts as a central controller to provision, search, and order connectivity and cloud services, while the decentralized Tellus Node bridges infrastructure providers with the ecosystem. A proof-of-concept demo showcased applications like real-time robotic control via smart gloves, dynamic digital twin integration for production plants, and pay-per-part systems for TRUMPF’s laser cutting tools. These examples highlight the platform’s ability to meet stringent requirements for latency, bandwidth, and security.
