The InfiniBand Trade Association (IBTA) has announced significant advancements in its Volume 1 Release 1.8 Specification, which introduces critical enhancements aimed at driving the next generation of high-performance RDMA networking. The new specification supports faster data transfer rates, improved security, and advanced network management, making it a pivotal update for applications in artificial intelligence (AI), scientific computing, and hyperscale data centers.
Key enhancements in the Release 1.8 Specification include:
• XDR Speed: Supports ~200Gb/s per lane for higher data throughput.
• XDR FEC Support: Enhances data integrity and transmission reliability.
• Next-gen Interfaces: Supports 4 Lane QSFP 800 Gb/s and 8 Lane QSFP-DD and OSFP 1600 Gb/s for high-speed data connectivity.
• Improved Security: Strengthens protections for RDMA fabrics in data-intensive environments.
• Congestion Control: Incorporates switch metadata during Network Probes for better traffic management.
• Large Radix Switches Support: Adds Class Version 2 to management attributes, supporting switches with up to 256 ports.
These updates come as RDMA networking continues to expand, driven by the booming AI market. IBTA also reported record-breaking participation in its Annual Plugfest, with 197 cables tested and 29 interoperability scenarios evaluated, further solidifying InfiniBand and RoCE technologies as industry standards for high-capacity, reliable networking.
