Intel Unveils Adaptive Control Unit Chip for Electric Vehicles

Intel announced the availability of its Adaptive Control Unit (ACU) U310 during CES 2025, designed for electric vehicle (EV) power trains and zonal controller applications. The ACU U310 consolidates multiple real-time, safety-critical, and cybersecure functions into a single chip, streamlining vehicle architecture and reducing system complexity. It enables deterministic processing and ensures reliable performance, even when handling multiple workloads simultaneously. Stellantis Motorsports and Karma Automotive are early adopters, integrating the ACU into their next-generation vehicle systems for enhanced efficiency and energy recovery.

The ACU U310 improves energy efficiency in EV power trains, potentially reclaiming up to 40% of powertrain energy losses and delivering a 3% to 5% efficiency gain during the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP). This results in longer vehicle range, faster charging, and reduced costs for components like batteries and motors. The ACU’s programmability also allows it to function as a software-defined zonal controller, simplifying vehicle design and accelerating the shift toward software-defined vehicles (SDVs).

“Intel automotive is bringing innovative solutions that reduce cost in the SDV revolution. Our whole-vehicle approach, combined with cloud integration, delivers a complete solution that drives down total cost of development and deployment while empowering automakers to build the future of mobility faster, more efficiently, and more profitably.” — Jack Weast, Intel Fellow, Vice President, and General Manager of Intel Automotive.
