IonQ Appoints Jordan Shapiro to Lead Quantum Networking Division
IonQ has appointed Jordan Shapiro as President and General Manager of its Quantum Networking business, reinforcing the company’s long-term strategy to develop secure, large-scale quantum internet infrastructure. Shapiro, who joined IonQ’s executive team in 2020 after investing in the company during its early stages, previously led Financial Planning & Analysis, Corporate Development, and Investor Relations. His new role places him at the helm of IonQ’s efforts to integrate recent acquisitions and drive advancements in quantum-secure communication technologies.
Under Shapiro’s leadership, IonQ has expanded its networking portfolio with the acquisitions of Qubitekk and a majority stake in ID Quantique—two companies focused on quantum cryptography and entanglement-based secure networking. His appointment signals IonQ’s intent to accelerate development of the quantum internet and expand its influence in the broader ecosystem of quantum information science. IonQ aims to combine its expertise in ion-trap quantum computing with quantum networking to enable ultra-secure, distributed computing environments.
Shapiro holds dual engineering degrees from Stanford University and previously worked in venture capital at New Enterprise Associates. His promotion reflects IonQ’s focus on execution across both quantum computing and networking as it scales commercial deployments and strengthens its technical roadmap.

In late 2024, the company acquired Qubitekk, a quantum networking firm, integrating its technology and 118 patents into IonQ’s operations. This acquisition facilitated the establishment of the EPB Quantum Network in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a commercially available quantum network managed by IonQ. Building on this momentum, IonQ announced in February 2025 its agreement to acquire a controlling stake in ID Quantique (IDQ), a Swiss-based leader in quantum-safe networking and sensing. This move added nearly 300 patents to IonQ’s portfolio, bringing its total to over 900, and positioned the company to form the world’s largest quantum-safe networks. Additionally, IonQ entered into a strategic partnership with SK Telecom, South Korea’s leading ICT company, to enhance the distribution of its quantum technology in Asia. These developments underscore IonQ’s commitment to advancing secure quantum communications and establishing a robust quantum internet infrastructure.
