Lumen Technologies accelerated its multi-year network expansion, aiming to more than double the size of its U.S. intercity fiber backbone to 47 million miles (75.6 million km) by 2028. The company said AI is driving unprecedented demand for bandwidth and ultra-low latency, with enterprises requiring denser, faster, and more reliable connectivity to support large-scale workloads. In 2025, Lumen has already deployed millions of new fiber miles, signal boosters, and capacity upgrades across the country.
So far this year, Lumen has delivered 2.2 million new intercity fiber miles (3.5 million km), constructed 176 In-Line Amplifier sites to boost long-haul performance, and secured long-term rights to additional conduit routes. Network upgrades added 5.9 petabits per second (Pbps) of capacity and more than $100 million has been allocated to extend 400 Gbps services across clouds, metros, and data centers. Lumen’s fiber deployments rely on next-generation Corning cable that doubles fiber density in existing conduits.
The company also highlighted its Private Connectivity Fabric (PCF), designed for AI workloads with 25% lower optical loss than rival networks and 60% more capacity than traditional designs. Lumen’s backbone now covers more than 100,000 route miles (160,900 km) with latency under five milliseconds at the edge, reaching up to 97% of U.S. business demand. “This isn’t incremental – we plan to more than double the size of our U.S. network,” said Kye Prigg, executive vice president, enterprise operations at Lumen. “We’re positioning Lumen as the trusted network for AI.”
