Netomnia Upgrades to 50G PON with Adtran SDX 6400

Netomnia and Adtran have launched the UK’s first commercial 50G PON (passive optical network) service, marking a major step forward in the country’s broadband infrastructure. The rollout leverages Adtran’s SDX 6400 Series to upgrade an existing residential customer to ultra-high-speed broadband, showcasing the viability of next-generation PON for mainstream deployment.

The deployment was executed over Netomnia’s existing fiber infrastructure, demonstrating seamless integration with earlier PON generations and allowing for cost-effective scaling without service interruptions. Adtran’s SDX 6400 Series platform, designed for flexibility and multi-generational coexistence, enabled the transition without requiring substantial changes to the access network.

This milestone highlights the readiness of 50G PON to meet surging bandwidth demands from cloud applications, 4K/8K video streaming, and low-latency services. The real-world deployment will provide valuable operational data as the UK prepares for broader adoption of advanced fiber technologies.

“Our goal is to ensure the UK is future-ready, and this deployment of 50G PON with Adtran’s help puts us at the forefront of broadband innovation,” said a spokesperson for Netomnia.
