Opening the OCP Global Summit before a record crowd of more than 11,000 attendees, George Tchaparian, CEO of the Open Compute Project Foundation, underscored the organization’s transformation into what he called “the premier organization for AI.”
Tchaparian reflected on OCP’s rapid growth since he took the helm four years ago and credited the community’s collaborative model for enabling hyperscalers, innovators, and startups alike to advance open standards for data center infrastructure.
“By the community, for the community — that’s the value OCP brings,” he said. “We take hyperscale innovation and bring it to all.”
This year’s summit theme, “Leading the Future of AI,” reflects how AI is reshaping every layer of data center design—from silicon and interconnects to power, cooling, and sustainability. Tchaparian highlighted new contributions from hyperscale members:
- Google, Meta, and Microsoft jointly released 1 MW rack specifications, a major milestone for standardized AI cluster design.
- Google contributed two new specifications for cooling distribution units (CDUs), helping address fragmentation in cooling system design.
- NVIDIA, building on its GB200 work, contributed the GB300 compute shelf, leveraging OCP’s collaborative design model.
“These specifications represent unification and standardization that accelerate development, reduce waste, and improve sustainability,” Tchaparian emphasized. “They cut time-to-market and cost by half.”
Expanding the Collaborative Ecosystem
Tchaparian announced several new initiatives to expand OCP’s global impact:
- OCP Networking Workstream: A new collaboration involving Arista, Broadcom, and others to standardize the transport layer of the Internet, ensuring scalability for the AI era.
- OCP Academy: Designed to accelerate onboarding for startups and new members, offering structured pathways for contribution and educational programs featuring industry experts.
- OCP Accelerating Innovation Fund: Launching in early 2026 to support projects aligned with OCP’s mission of open, sustainable infrastructure innovation.
- Global Sustainability Framework: Developed with Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Schneider Electric, this initiative defines a common reporting standard for carbon impact across data center equipment, with an accompanying certification logo for OCP Marketplace listings.
Strategic Alliances and Global Growth
OCP continues to broaden its alliances to address AI infrastructure holistically:
- UALink Consortium (AI interconnect standardization)
- Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) for AI cluster storage architectures
- ASHRAE for energy efficiency and sustainability
- OIX for harmonizing OCP Ready™ standards with global data center frameworks
Tchaparian noted OCP’s international expansion, with more than 500 member companies and a growing network of OCP Ready™ facilities, experience centers, and integrators worldwide.
“We’re moving from hyperscale cloud to AI—and now to the distributed edge,” he said. “From silicon to system, to facility, and all the way to the grid.”
Tchaparian previewed a new Open Data Center Strategic Initiative, uniting hyperscalers and community members under one umbrella to align efforts “from silicon to physical infrastructure.” A joint open letter from Google, Microsoft, and Meta will be released outlining this collaborative direction.
He closed by encouraging all attendees to use OCP’s collaborative platform to speed innovation:
