QUALCOMM Plans Single-Chip UMTS and HSDPA

QUALCOMM announced an expansion to its QUALCOMM Single Chip (QSC) family to include support for UMTS. The company will offer a device for WEDGE (WCDMA and GSM/GPRS/EDGE) and another device for HEDGE (HSDPA/WCDMA and GSM/GPRS/EDGE). Sampling is expected by Q3 2007.

QUALCOMM said these two devices are world’s first solutions to integrate a monolithic die — with integrated radio transceiver, baseband modem and multimedia processor — together with power management functionality into a single chip for WCDMA (UMTS) and HSDPA handsets. The complete chipset will come in a 12mm x 12mm package.
