Vibrant Broadband, a subsidiary of Meeker Energy and one of the Midwest’s first electric cooperatives, has selected Ribbon Communications to modernize its middle mile infrastructure. The deployment delivers a tenfold increase in bandwidth, improved network visibility, and streamlined deployment as the cooperative expands broadband access across rural communities.
The new system integrates Ribbon’s NPT 2100 IP aggregation router with its MUSE Multilayer Automation Platform. The combination provides end-to-end network control, analysis, and planning tools, enabling Vibrant Broadband to accelerate service expansion, reduce operational complexity, and prepare for next-generation applications. The platform also positions the cooperative to unlock new revenue streams and maximize return on infrastructure investments.
Vibrant Broadband emphasized Ribbon’s technical expertise and high-touch support as key factors in the decision. “This upgrade marks a major milestone for us, enabling us to expand our service offerings, better serve our growing customer base, and support future technologies,” said Andrew Kalkbrenner, IT Manager at Vibrant Broadband.
• Vibrant Broadband operates under Meeker Energy, an early electric cooperative in Minnesota
• Ribbon NPT 2100 enables compact, high-performance IP aggregation
• MUSE Automation Platform delivers design, analysis, and operational efficiency
• Deployment achieves 10x bandwidth capacity increase and strengthens scalability
• Upgrade supports growth in rural broadband services and future technologies
“We’re proud to support Vibrant Broadband’s mission to bring world-class connectivity to rural communities,” said Elizabeth Page, U.S. Regional Sales Leader at Ribbon.
🌐 Analysis: Rural cooperatives are becoming central to U.S. broadband expansion as federal programs prioritize middle mile and last mile connectivity. Ribbon’s focus on automation and IP optical integration puts it in competition with vendors such as Calix, Adtran, and Nokia, all pursuing rural broadband upgrades with utility and cooperative partners. For providers like Vibrant, automation and scalability are critical as demand for AI-driven applications, streaming, and remote work continues to rise in underserved regions.
