SoftBank and OpenAI to Roll Out Enterprise AI: “Crystal Intelligence”

SoftBank Group and OpenAI have established a joint venture called SB OAI Japan GK to commercialize “Crystal intelligence,” a new enterprise AI solution aimed at transforming corporate management and operations across Japan. The venture, launched November 5, 2025, will provide localized implementation, system integration, and support for OpenAI’s latest enterprise models. SoftBank Corp. will be the first adopter, using Crystal intelligence to validate its performance in productivity and business transformation before a broader rollout in 2026.

Crystal intelligence packages OpenAI’s advanced models and tools with domain-specific optimization for Japan’s business environment. The solution is designed to embed AI directly into decision-making and workflow management processes, enhancing efficiency, insight, and collaboration. SoftBank has already developed about 2.5 million custom GPTs for internal use as part of its AI-native transformation, and SB OAI Japan will build on this foundation to deliver enterprise-scale deployments.

Executives from both companies described the venture as a pivotal moment in Japan’s AI modernization drive. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said, “This joint venture with SoftBank is an important step that will accelerate our vision for bringing advanced AI to some of the world’s most influential companies, starting with Japan.” Masayoshi Son added, “With the launch of SB OAI Japan, AI agents will understand our goals and collaborate with each other to autonomously carry out tasks we want them to perform.”

• SB OAI Japan GK is jointly owned by SoftBank Group Corp., SoftBank Corp., and OpenAI Group PBC

• “Crystal intelligence” integrates OpenAI’s enterprise AI offerings with localized support for Japanese companies

• SoftBank Corp. will serve as the first deployment site, testing the platform for internal business transformation

• The venture targets full market rollout in 2026

• SoftBank has internally created ≈ 2.5 million custom GPTs as part of its AI-native transition

🌐 Analysis:

This alliance deepens SoftBank’s pivot toward becoming an AI-centric conglomerate and reinforces Japan’s national ambition to close the productivity gap through automation. For OpenAI, the joint venture expands its regional footprint and sets a precedent for localized enterprise AI integration, complementing its recent corporate partnerships with Microsoft and Oracle. The “Crystal intelligence” model may serve as a blueprint for AI-native enterprise transformation in other major economies as AI agents move from experimentation to core management infrastructure.

SoftBank’s collaboration with OpenAI extends beyond Japan and includes participation in major U.S. initiatives tied to OpenAI’s data center expansion strategy. The company has been linked to the Stargate project, a massive AI supercomputing campus under development by OpenAI and its key partner Oracle, with SoftBank reportedly helping to finance or source advanced GPUs and related infrastructure through its Vision Fund and technology affiliates. SoftBank’s founder, Masayoshi Son, has also emerged as a vocal proponent of global AI infrastructure investment, advocating for multi-continent data center build-outs to support OpenAI’s scaling needs. These efforts align with SoftBank’s broader strategy to position itself as both a strategic investor and deployment partner in the emerging AI compute ecosystem spanning Japan, the United States, and beyond.
