Telefónica has launched the first operational deployment of 5G within a Standing NATO Maritime Group, bringing private 5G connectivity to a naval vessel under NATO Maritime Command (MARCOM). The deployment, which began on 14 September, provides secure, wideband, and low-latency communications between ships and unmanned systems, strengthening mission-critical communications for the alliance.
The project, running through December, equips a NATO vessel with a 5G node developed in collaboration with Spanish partners Atika Technologies, which supplied the 5G core, and Ravenloop, a cyber intelligence firm, alongside Nokia. The private 5G architecture enables secure communications across the fleet, including with drones, surface vehicles, and autonomous submarines, without relying on public networks or satellites. The system includes remote operation features, continuous support, and specialized crew training.
By extending its “5G bubble” tactical communications solution to maritime environments, Telefónica is enabling NATO to test the operational feasibility and resilience of 5G at sea. The initiative supports integration of emerging technologies such as AI, edge computing, predictive maintenance, and autonomous system management, marking a significant step toward multi-domain operations across land, cyberspace, air, and now sea.
