Telstra Deploys Ericsson’s Next-Gen RAN

Ericsson and Telstra have announced the successful deployment of Ericsson’s 4th generation Radio Access Network (RAN) compute platform, marking a significant advancement in mobile connectivity. The deployment, which went live on August 14, 2024, leverages the RAN Processor 6672 in a Centralised RAN (C-RAN) configuration, offering more than three times the capacity of previous generations. This new technology is designed to enhance data speed, reliability, and efficiency while reducing energy consumption by up to 60% compared to traditional distributed deployments.

Telstra is the first telecommunications provider globally to deploy and operate commercial traffic on this advanced RAN platform. The platform supports advanced AI/ML capabilities and offers improved flexibility, enabling a more programmable and responsive network. This deployment is a key step in preparing Telstra’s network for future 5G Advanced technologies and beyond, ensuring that the network can evolve to meet increasing data demands and support new features as they become available.

“The deployment of our latest Generation RAN compute platform with Telstra represents a significant global milestone in mobile technology,” said Emilio Romeo, Head of Ericsson, Australia, and New Zealand.
