Windstream and Ciena Light Up 400G Route Across Gulf Coast

Windstream Wholesale has upgraded its optical infrastructure between Houston, Texas, and Tallahassee, Florida, with a new overbuild leveraging Ciena’s Reconfigurable Line System (RLS) and advanced monitoring tools. The enhanced route delivers 400G optical transport services and positions the network for future 800G support. This Gulf Coast corridor expands Windstream’s diverse route portfolio and supports increased demand for high-capacity bandwidth in regions experiencing rapid AI and data center growth.

The build integrates in-line Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) monitoring for faster issue resolution and reduced downtime. Fewer regeneration points along the route improve operational efficiency and lower service costs. Remote provisioning of express locations and multiple ROADM segments further accelerates deployment and reduces the need for on-site work, enabling faster service turn-up for enterprise and wholesale customers.

Windstream Wholesale’s expanded 400G capability aligns with ongoing projects such as the Florida-to-Atlanta Beach Route and builds in Texas. The new route adds resilience and scalability to the company’s national optical network and enhances service offerings for cloud providers, hyperscalers, and carriers.

“These enhancements allow us to optimize service costs and deliver superior connectivity along this vital route,” said Joe Scattareggia, president of Windstream Wholesale.
