Google Cloud secured a £400 million ($510 million) contract to provide a sovereign cloud for the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), marking one of the largest public sector cloud deals in the country. The project will deliver a secure cloud environment that supports the MOD’s modernization agenda, including advanced cybersecurity, AI capabilities, and enhanced data controls.

The initiative forms part of the UK’s Strategic Defence Review, which emphasizes digital transformation to bolster defence readiness and secure information processing. Google Cloud will establish a dedicated UK-based team to manage the sovereign cloud, while also committing to job creation, skills development, and new opportunities for startups and small businesses within the UK defence ecosystem.

Officials from the MOD, including Commander of Cyber & Specialist Operations Command General Sir James Hockenhull, emphasized that the partnership will enhance national security and strengthen operational capabilities. Defence Secretary John Healey highlighted the broader economic impact, noting that the deal would support high-skilled jobs and reinforce the UK’s tech sector.

  • Contract value: £400 million ($510 million)
  • Project scope: Sovereign cloud for secure data, cybersecurity, and AI applications
  • Alignment: MOD Strategic Defence Review digital transformation strategy
  • Investment: Google Cloud to establish a UK-based sovereign cloud team
  • Economic impact: Skills development, startup ecosystem growth, job creation

“Google Cloud is dedicated to supporting the UK government’s mission to develop a robust and resilient infrastructure and harness the latest technology innovations,” said Tara Brady, EMEA President, Google Cloud.

🌐 Analysis: This award positions Google Cloud alongside Microsoft and AWS in the race to deliver sovereign cloud platforms for defence and government customers in Europe. The UK MOD’s emphasis on AI and secure digital transformation mirrors similar initiatives across NATO allies, underscoring the growing role of hyperscalers in national security infrastructure.
