Google Expands UK Cloud & AI Infrastructure with £5 Billion Plan

Google has opened a new data centre in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, marking a major milestone in its £5 billion two-year UK investment plan aimed at scaling AI and cloud services. Opened by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, the site will support Google Cloud, Workspace, Search, and Maps while also bolstering the UK’s AI research capacity through Google DeepMind. More than 250 companies, most of them local, contributed to the construction of the facility.

The investment package spans capital expenditure, R&D, and engineering, and is expected to generate 8,250 AI-driven jobs annually at UK businesses. Google is also launching a Broxbourne Community Fund to support local development and partnering with regional charities to deliver digital and AI skills training. At the national level, Google is part of an industry group working to equip 7.5 million Britons with job-ready AI skills by 2030.

Energy and sustainability form a central part of the project. Google signed a pioneering agreement with Shell Energy Europe to act as its 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Manager in the UK, leveraging storage systems and renewable sources such as Scotland’s Moray West wind project. With these measures, Google expects its UK operations to reach about 95% carbon-free energy in 2026. The Waltham Cross site features advanced air-cooling systems to minimise water use and supports off-site heat recovery to provide surplus heat to nearby homes, schools, and businesses.

• £5 billion two-year UK investment program covering data centres, R&D, and engineering

• Waltham Cross facility to power Google Cloud, Workspace, Search, and Maps

• Partnership with Shell to manage 24/7 clean energy portfolio and grid stability

• UK operations projected to run on ~95% carbon-free energy by 2026

• Investments projected to create 8,250 new AI-related jobs annually

• Broxbourne Community Fund to support local development and digital skills training

“Google’s investment in technical infrastructure, expanded energy capacity and job-ready AI skills will help ensure everyone in Broxbourne and across the whole of the UK stays at the cutting-edge of global tech opportunities,” said Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer, Alphabet and Google.

🌐 Analysis: Google’s move underscores the UK’s importance as a European AI hub, complementing DeepMind’s London base and the government’s push to accelerate AI adoption. The clean energy partnership with Shell reflects mounting pressure on hyperscalers to address the carbon footprint of AI data centres. Competitors such as Microsoft and AWS are also scaling UK facilities, but Google’s integration of AI research, infrastructure investment, and energy innovation positions it to capture both market growth and political goodwill.
