Intelsat completed its acquisition of PanAmSat, creating the world’s largest commercial fixed satellite services provider. Intelsat acquired all of the outstanding common shares of PanAmSat for approximately $3.2 billion. The deal was first announced in August 2005.

PanAmSat brings a video-centric customer base, including leading providers of cable TV programming, while Intelsat’s historical strength has been in providing core telephony and advanced data services to developing and underserved regions around the world.

PanAmSat owns and operates a fleet of 25 satellites that transmit a total of 1,991 television channels worldwide, making the company a leading carrier of standard and high-definition signals. In total, the company’s in-orbit fleet is capable of reaching over 98% of the world’s population through cable television systems, broadcast affiliates, direct-to-home operators, Internet service providers and telecommunications companies.

Intelsat, which was established in 1964 as the first commercial satellite provider, currently operates a fleet of 27 satellites.

The combined company will operate a fleet of over 50 satellites and a large, complementary terrestrial network, including eight owned teleports, fiber connectivity and over 50 points of presence in almost 40 cities. Some other highlights on the new Intelsat:

  • Carries one out of every four television channels transmitted over fixed satellites;
  • Supports 27 DTH platforms worldwide;
  • Operates 16 satellites that are part of video neighborhoods around the world;
  • Is the number one provider of transponders for video programming worldwide;
  • Carries more high definition (HD) programming than any other FSS carrier;
  • Is the largest provider of commercial satellite services to the government sector;
  • Provides communications services to 99 percent of the world’s populated regions.
  • Will be domiciled in Pembroke, Bermuda with its U.S. headquarters in Washington, D.C.
