Adtran and Netomnia have announced a partnership to bring 50Gbit/s passive optical network (50G PON) services to the UK. This rollout aims to address the growing bandwidth needs for homes, businesses, and data-intensive applications like cloud computing, smart home devices, and multi-modal AI. With 50G PON, Netomnia will introduce the UK’s first multigigabit broadband services, providing a solid foundation for future network growth while maintaining compatibility with existing GPON and XGS-PON networks.

Netomnia, the UK’s fourth-largest full-fiber network following its merger with brsk, has aggressive expansion goals. The company plans to reach 3 million premises by 2025, backed by £1.3 billion in funding. The collaboration with Adtran marks a significant milestone for the company’s mission to deliver multigigabit connectivity nationwide. 50G PON technology will not only enhance the capacity and performance of the network but also support smart cities, 5G base stations, and next-generation applications like virtual reality.

Key Points:

• Adtran and Netomnia are launching 50G PON services in the UK.

• 50G PON supports cloud computing, smart homes, online gaming, and generative AI.

• Netomnia plans to reach 3 million premises by 2025.

• £1.3 billion in funding backs the rollout.

• 50G PON technology will coexist with GPON and XGS-PON, easing network upgrades.

“We’re proud to introduce 50G PON services to the UK in collaboration with Adtran,” said Jeremy Chelot, Group CEO of Netomnia. “This technology supports multiple high-speed Ethernet services and allows us to scale efficiently, aiming to serve 1 million customers by 2028.”
