Sierra Space has signed agreements with Astral Materials and Space Forge to advance microgravity manufacturing in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). These collaborations aim to leverage Sierra Space’s Dream Chaser spaceplane and space station technologies to develop semiconductor materials and components using space’s unique microgravity environment. The agreements include Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) outlining cooperation in design, development, and operational input for space-based manufacturing.
Astral Materials, headquartered in California, specializes in growing ultra-high-quality semiconductor crystals in microgravity for advanced chip technologies. Space Forge, a Florida-based subsidiary of the UK company, focuses on producing next-generation materials using free-flying manufacturing facilities. Together with Sierra Space, these companies plan to scale up LEO-based manufacturing to meet commercial and national security needs while driving innovation in the space economy.
The partnerships include payload logistics for Dream Chaser® missions and collaborative design of in-space manufacturing facilities for Sierra Space’s future space stations. “At Sierra Space, our mission is to create a LEO economy that benefits life on Earth, and these new agreements bring us one step closer,” said CEO Tom Vice.
