Arelion activated a new cross-border fiber route connecting its first Point-of-Presence (PoP) in Tijuana to its dual PoPs in San Diego, establishing a fully diverse underground link into its North American backbone. The new route enables terabit-scale, low-latency connectivity for wholesale and enterprise customers across Mexico, offering direct access to Southern California content providers and major AI and cloud infrastructure markets in Phoenix and Los Angeles. The infrastructure upgrade utilizes next-gen open line systems and 400G coherent pluggable optics.
This expansion brings Arelion’s total PoPs in Mexico to ten, spanning cities including Mexico City, Monterrey, Querétaro, Guadalajara, and Mérida. The Tijuana deployment responds to rapid digital and industrial growth in Baja California, where nearshoring in aerospace, medical devices, and electronics manufacturing is driving demand for robust cross-border connectivity. The new route is strategically positioned near emerging subsea cable projects, such as the Bifrost cable, and coincides with over $600 million in industrial real estate investment in Tijuana.
Arelion’s reinforced footprint supports scalable services including IP Transit, Wavelengths, DIA, Cloud Connect, and DDoS mitigation for cloud providers, hyperscalers, and digital-first enterprises. Its PoPs in San Diego are located at EdgeConneX and LightEdge data centers, while Tijuana is anchored at Neutral Networks’ carrier-neutral site.
- New fully diverse underground route connects Tijuana to San Diego
- Supports terabit-scale capacity and 400G optics for low-latency service
- Provides direct access to U.S. AI and cloud data centers in Phoenix and LA
- Arelion now operates 10 PoPs across Mexico
- Tijuana expansion aligns with nearshoring trends and Bifrost subsea developments
“This new cross-border route allows us to support Mexico’s ongoing economic growth and digital innovation amid the continued rise of AI and cloud applications,” said Edison De Leon, Regional Director of Latam & Caribbean at Arelion.
🌐 Why it Matters: Arelion’s cross-border fiber route is a timely boost for digital trade between Mexico and the U.S., as nearshoring accelerates demand for resilient, high-throughput links. It also positions Tijuana as a regional connectivity hub tied to broader subsea and hyperscale infrastructure developments.
