Astera Labs has announced a production ramp for its comprehensive PCIe 6 connectivity portfolio, expanding its offerings with a new Aries 6 PCIe Smart Gearbox alongside existing fabric switches, retimers, and active cable modules . The move is aimed at supercharging advanced AI and cloud infrastructure deployments . The Aries 6 Smart Gearbox is the industry’s first purpose-built PCIe gearbox solution, intelligently bridging PCIe 6 and PCIe 5 ecosystems to eliminate performance bottlenecks in mixed-generation systems .

According to Astera Labs, its PCIe 6 solutions have successfully completed qualification with leading AI and cloud server customers, and the company is ramping up to volume production in parallel with these customers’ next-generation AI platform rollouts . The expanded portfolio integrates with the company’s COSMOS software suite for enhanced data center management and has been extensively tested in Astera’s Cloud-Scale Interop Lab to ensure interoperability across multiple PCIe generations . Major industry players – including AMD, Inventec, Micron, Samsung, and others – have expressed support for Astera Labs’ PCIe 6 solutions, underscoring their importance in advancing AI infrastructure capabilities .

Key PCIe 6 Portfolio Elements

  • Aries 6 PCIe Smart Gearbox – the industry’s first PCIe gearbox bridging PCIe 6 and PCIe 5, designed to maintain full performance in mixed-generation systems .
  • Scorpio P-Series Smart Fabric Switches – PCIe 6 fabric switches for mixed AI and data center traffic, enabling high-bandwidth, low-latency connectivity among GPUs, CPUs, NICs, and SSDs .
  • Aries 6 PCIe/CXL Smart DSP Retimers – high-speed retimer chips that overcome PCIe 6/CXL 3 signal integrity challenges with a 3× reach extension, delivering reliable low-power connectivity for hyperscale AI servers .
  • Aries 6 PCIe/CXL Smart Cable Modules (SCMs) – active cable modules extending PCIe 6/CXL 3 links up to 7 meters for GPU clustering across dense racks using copper Active Electrical Cables (AECs) .
  • PCIe 6 over Optics Technology – enables PCIe 6 connectivity via optical links for GPU/accelerator clustering over longer distances, adding flexibility for rack-scale AI deployments .

Thad Omura, Chief Business Officer at Astera Labs, said, “Our PCIe 6 solutions have successfully completed qualification with leading AI and cloud server customers, and we are ramping up to volume production in parallel with their next generation AI platform rollouts. By continuing to expand our industry-leading PCIe connectivity portfolio … we are providing our hyperscaler and data center partners all the necessary tools to accelerate the development and deployment of leading-edge AI platforms.”

Industry supporters mentioned in Astera Labs’ announcement include AMD, Inventec, Keysight, Micron, Quanta, Samsung, Teledyne LeCroy, Wistron, and Wiwynn .
