AT&T is further expanding its fiber network across the United States through continued growth of its Gigapower venture and new agreements with four commercial open-access providers. These agreements with Boldyn Networks, Digital Infrastructure Group, PRIME FiBER, and Ubiquity will extend AT&T Fiber and 5G services to new regions, addressing areas previously without high-speed fiber access. AT&T’s joint venture with BlackRock, through the Gigapower initiative, is also on track to grow beyond the 1.5 million locations initially announced in December 2022.
The company’s latest moves focus on leveraging both organic network expansion and partnerships to broaden its fiber coverage, which already serves over 28 million consumer and business fiber locations. The expansion aligns with AT&T’s strategic goals of scaling fiber builds and meeting increasing demand for converged broadband and wireless services. The company also sees a strong correlation between fiber deployment and improved wireless business performance in overlapping service areas.
In partnering with open-access fiber providers, AT&T is expanding into new markets without significant fiber presence, ensuring broader availability of its fiber and 5G offerings. As these providers add locations, AT&T will evaluate new opportunities to offer its services. This push comes as AT&T seeks to scale its fiber and wireless convergence, targeting improved customer penetration rates and aiming to pass over 30 million locations by the end of 2025.
• AT&T has entered agreements with Boldyn Networks, Digital Infrastructure Group, PRIME FiBER, and Ubiquity.
• The expansion will cover new regions, especially areas previously underserved by high-speed fiber.
• Gigapower is set to expand beyond its initial 1.5 million locations.
• AT&T aims to pass over 30 million fiber locations by 2025, with potential to exceed that target by an additional 10 to 15 million locations.
“With our organic fiber build, we’re seeing improving returns as we expand our network. In new service areas, Gigapower is ramping well, and we’re targeting additional geographies for growth with the joint venture and other commercial open-access agreements,” said John Stankey, CEO of AT&T.
