NBN Co has announced a significant upgrade initiative to extend Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) to the remaining homes and businesses still using the Fibre to the Node (FTTN) network across Australia. The project, supported by an investment of up to A$3 billion from the Australian Government and over A$800 million from NBN Co, will upgrade broadband infrastructure to deliver faster, more reliable connectivity. The initiative will cover approximately 622,000 premises, with over 50% of the locations situated in regional Australia, providing more than 95% of these homes and businesses the option to switch to full fibre broadband.
The upgrade rollout, starting immediately and set for completion by the end of 2030, will replace outdated copper-based FTTN technology with modern fibre infrastructure, offering nbn’s fastest upload and download speeds. This transition will support growing data consumption trends, with Australian homes averaging 22 connected devices today and projected to reach 40 devices with over 1,100 GB of monthly data consumption within a decade. Faster broadband will enhance streaming, gaming, remote work, and education capabilities across the upgraded regions.
This investment builds on NBN Co’s broader commitment to expand fibre access nationwide. The company aims to deliver 10 million premises—around 90% of the fixed-line network—access to its highest-speed services by the end of 2025. To date, more than 9 million premises already have access, including over 4 million with FTTP availability.
