Amazon has signed three new agreements to advance nuclear energy projects to address its growing energy needs. The agreements focus on the development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), a compact and scalable type of nuclear reactor. In partnership with Energy Northwest, Amazon will help enable the construction of four SMRs in Washington, providing up to 960 megawatts (MW) of carbon-free energy to meet the Pacific Northwest’s power demands. Additionally, Amazon has collaborated with X-energy, which will supply advanced nuclear reactor designs and manufacturing for future projects.
In Virginia, Amazon is working with Dominion Energy to explore an SMR project near the North Anna nuclear power station. The project could deliver at least 300 MW of carbon-free power, helping meet the region’s rising energy needs. Separately, Amazon has a prior agreement with Talen Energy in Pennsylvania to co-locate a data center near an existing nuclear facility. This initiative supports carbon-free power for Amazon’s data centers while helping preserve the reactor and local jobs.
These investments align with Amazon’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040. The projects are expected to create temporary construction jobs and permanent roles once the SMRs become operational. Amazon views nuclear energy as a scalable, carbon-free solution to meet future power demands while supporting local economies.
