BR.Digital has upgraded its long-haul optical infrastructure using Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) coherent optics, enabling 1.1 Tbps single-wavelength transmission across spans exceeding 800 kilometers. The enhancement extends the lifespan of BR.Digital’s existing flexi-grid network while increasing spectral efficiency and supporting the country’s accelerating demand for high-capacity data transport.
Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, BR.Digital is a leading wholesale communications service provider in Brazil, specializing in high-capacity data transport and optical networking. The company has built a national fiber optic backbone that spans over 70,000 kilometers, delivering connectivity across 2,406 cities—reaching regions that collectively account for 90% of Brazil’s GDP.
The WL6e deployment strengthens BR.Digital’s backbone and reinforces its ability to meet rising data traffic demands from hyperscalers and enterprise customers. With over 70,000 kilometers of fiber reaching 2,406 cities and 90% of Brazil’s GDP regions, BR.Digital is positioning itself as a key enabler of Brazil’s digital growth. The WL6e platform also reduces equipment footprint and power consumption, aligning with sustainability goals.
Ciena and BR.Digital have partnered since 2014 on coherent optical deployments. This latest upgrade further integrates Ciena’s high-capacity optics and automation to improve performance and scalability of the national transport network.
“Our network enhancement gives us a significant competitive edge to deliver greater value to our customers and get the most of our existing network assets while maximizing spectrum efficiency and reducing energy consumption,” said Rodrigo Alfonso, VP of Operations at BR.Digital.
🌐 Why it Matters: Coherent optics are foundational for scaling national backbones and supporting the data needs of hyperscalers and 5G. Brazil’s growing digital economy demands low-latency, high-bandwidth solutions that can extend across vast geographies. BR.Digital’s upgrade with WL6e places it in a stronger position to attract cloud and content providers seeking resilient, high-capacity transport across South America.
