Brightspeed tests 50G-PON with Calix

Brightspeed, the nation’s third-largest fiber broadband builder, successfully tested 50G-PON technology in collaboration with Calix, advancing its roadmap for future-proof broadband services. Conducted at Brightspeed’s Technology Advancement Center (BTAC) in Charlotte, N.C., the trial demonstrated seamless delivery of 50G-PON, XGS-PON, and GPON over the same fiber infrastructure. The test marks a key milestone toward enabling ultra-fast, low-latency connectivity for applications like 8K streaming, AR/VR, telehealth, and enterprise-scale services.

The next-gen 50G-PON introduces dual rate capability—offering asymmetric 50G/25G and symmetric 50G/50G—integrated into Brightspeed’s existing optical distribution network architecture. Leveraging the Calix Broadband Platform and Calix Cloud, the test validated that Brightspeed can deliver converged services including private networks, fixed wireless, and mobile backhaul without the need for extensive new hardware investments. This capability enhances operational efficiency and accelerates the deployment of advanced connectivity experiences.

While XGS-PON remains sufficient for most current residential and SMB demands, Brightspeed sees 50G-PON as essential to meet the rapid growth in digital applications. The operator now has the flexibility to evolve its network in line with market demand and emerging technologies. The successful test positions Brightspeed as an early leader in 50G-PON and underscores its readiness to drive the next wave of fiber innovation.

  • Brightspeed and Calix successfully test 50G-PON alongside XGS-PON and GPON
  • Trial conducted at Brightspeed’s BTAC innovation lab in Charlotte, N.C.
  • 50G-PON enables dual rate (50G/25G and 50G/50G) on existing fiber network
  • Supports future converged services: private networks, fixed wireless, mobile backhaul
  • Brightspeed strengthens position for next-generation broadband demand

“This is exactly the type of cutting-edge innovation we envisioned would come from the Brightspeed Technology Advancement Center when we launched it in 2023,” said Brian Bond, Chief Network Officer at Brightspeed.
