The Broadband Forum and the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) announced a collaboration between their respective smart home standards, the User Services Platform (USP) and Matter. This alliance aims to streamline smart home integration and simplify device management for broadband service providers (BSPs) and network operators. With the Matter protocol integrated into USP, BSPs can accelerate the rollout of smart devices like TVs and speakers, managing them remotely via a cloud-based controller rather than brand-specific hubs or apps.
The new specification, called “MatterService Data Model for USP-enabled Devices (WT-517),” is expected by mid-2025. This standard will facilitate communication between Matter-enabled devices and USP controllers within Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) like routers and gateways. By unifying control layers, BSPs can deliver an enhanced user experience with consistent, simplified smart home interactions across brands. Network operators can streamline both device management and the deployment of new services, providing a holistic view of the home network and driving more efficient connectivity.
Orange’s Senior VP of Home Services Innovation, Chem Assayag, noted the strategic benefits, explaining, “This is not just a technical upgrade; it is a strategic opportunity to drive widespread adoption of the Matter standard, preparing the entire home ecosystem for the smart home revolution.”
• Matter and USP integration set for completion by Summer 2025
• MatterService Data Model (WT-517) enables cross-brand smart home control via USP
• Orange and Broadband Forum emphasize the benefits of standardized smart home protocols
• CPE-based USP agents facilitate data sharing between application and control layers
• BSPs and network operators expected to deliver more streamlined smart home experiences
