Leading fiber technology vendors gathered at a Broadband Forum Plugfest hosted by CableLabs in Louisville, Colorado, to test the interoperability of XGS-PON and 25GS-PON systems. The event aimed to ensure fiber network equipment from multiple vendors can seamlessly integrate, enabling broadband providers to deploy next-generation high-speed connectivity to homes and businesses. Participants included Askey Technology, AVM GmbH, Calix, Nokia, Sagemcom, Harmonic, and others.
The Plugfest focused on validating key test cases, including 25GS-PON TC-PM and XGS-PON OMCI, using Broadband Forum’s interoperability test plans (TR-309 Issue 3 and TR-255 Issue 2). These results help vendors refine their technologies and improve compatibility across fiber networks. The event also provided critical feedback to enhance future testing programs. CableLabs Vice President of Wired Technologies, Curtis Knittle, highlighted the importance of interoperability testing, stating that the event delivered “encouraging results” in aligning fiber network equipment.
• Broadband Forum hosted a Plugfest at CableLabs to test XGS-PON and 25GS-PON interoperability.
• Participating vendors included Askey, Calix, Nokia, Sagemcom, Harmonic, and others.
• Testing followed Broadband Forum’s TR-309 and TR-255 interoperability test plans.
• Results help improve vendor compatibility and industry collaboration.
• The next Plugfest, scheduled for February 24-28, 2025, at AT&T Labs in Plano, Texas, will focus on 25GS-PON and 50G-PON (HSP).
• Another Plugfest is planned for summer 2025 at LANPARK’s test laboratory.
“The goal of this and future Plugfests is to ensure that all broadband service providers are ready for the next generation of fiber connectivity, regardless of whether they are deploying GPON, XGS-PON, 25GS-PON, 50G-PON, or technologies beyond,” said Broadband Forum CEO Craig Thomas.
