Broadcom Acquires Sand Video for Video Compression

April 6, 2004
in Uncategorized
A A

Broadcom acquired Sand Video, a privately-held, Andover, Mass.-based company focused on the development of advanced video compression semiconductors for consumer digital video applications. Broadcom will pay a total of up to approximately $77.5 million – $70.1 million in the form of 1.666 million shares of its Class A common stock issued or reserved for future issuance (valued at the NASDAQ National Market closing price on April 6) and $7.4 million in cash consideration.

Sand Video’s products support existing MPEG-2, as well as the emerging ITU-T H.264 standard, also known as advanced video coding (AVC), or MPEG-4 Part 10, and will be supporting Microsoft’s Windows Media 9 compression and decompression standards in the future.

Broadcom said combination of Sand Video’s technologies and its own products would enable next-generation video solutions for a range of products, including digital TVs, enhanced cable and satellite TV set-top boxes, personal video recorders (PVRs), high definition DVD recorders and players, IP set-top boxes, and video conferencing, among others. http://www.broadcom.com
