Broadcom, Charter Communications, and Comcast announced a joint effort to develop Unified DOCSIS chipsets, designed to support both FDX and ESD versions of the DOCSIS 4.0 specification. These chipsets are set to enable speeds of up to 25 Gbps using existing hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) networks, enhancing the performance and scalability of cable operators. The chipsets are expected to work seamlessly across network nodes, smart amplifiers, and cable modems, allowing mid-split and high-split configurations.

The collaboration aims to integrate AI and machine learning capabilities into the network. Broadcom’s Neural Processing Unit (NPU) will be embedded in network infrastructure to drive operational efficiency, security, and improved network reliability. This will enable self-healing networks, real-time anomaly detection, and enhanced cybersecurity measures to protect against emerging AI-driven attacks.

This joint initiative aims to extend DOCSIS technology beyond its current limits by developing a pathway to 25 Gbps, with potential spectrum expansion to 3 GHz. This development allows cable operators to optimize their existing networks while keeping pace with higher-speed demands, reducing the need for new infrastructure investments.

Key Points:

• Joint effort from Broadcom, Charter, and Comcast for DOCSIS chipsets capable of 25 Gbps.

• Chipsets will support both DOCSIS FDX and ESD specifications.

• AI/ML features for network optimization, anomaly detection, and enhanced cybersecurity.

• Chipsets designed for compliance with DOCSIS 4.0 standards.

• Spectrum expansion to 3 GHz allows higher bandwidth on existing networks.

“Charter, Comcast, and Broadcom are collaboratively driving industry innovation through the Unified DOCSIS 4.0 specification,” said Rich DiGeronimo, President of Product and Technology, Charter Communications, which operates the Spectrum brand. “By integrating Broadcom’s cutting-edge technology into our network infrastructure and cable modems, our network will leverage artificial intelligence to enhance power, reliability, and cost-effectiveness, ultimately delivering superior services to our customers.”

“Broadcom is pleased to work with our operator partners in bringing the industry together around Unified DOCSIS,” added Charlie Kawwas, Ph. D., President of Broadcom’s Semiconductor Solutions Group. “With the 3 GHz capabilities, we’re providing the tools for cable operators to continue to enhance the leading capabilities of their networks while competing with higher and higher speed offerings. We’ve seen the huge benefits to operators and consumers of embedded AI/ML in access networks. From advanced diagnostics and network self-healing to state-of-the-art AI-based cybersecurity, the sky’s the limit for innovative machine learning applications.”
