Broadcom launched its 50G PON OLT-ONU merchant silicon platform, integrating AI/ML processing at the edge to accelerate telecom applications. The new chips allow operators to manage high-bandwidth demands while running AI-based applications locally, enhancing network efficiency and supporting new services like 5G small cell deployments. Designed for fiber networks, the solution delivers 40x the speed and lower latency compared to gigabit services while offering a significant reduction in power consumption.

The 50G PON technology can coexist with existing GPON and XGS-PON networks, making it easier for operators to upgrade without major infrastructure overhauls. By embedding a neural processing unit (NPU) directly into the system, the new platform allows AI and machine learning algorithms to run locally, providing enhanced privacy, lower latency, and improved security. Operators can use these features to reduce operational costs, optimize network performance, and prevent potential cyber threats.

The platform’s AI capabilities extend beyond traditional applications. With edge AI/ML, the platform enables real-time anomaly detection, network self-healing, and predictive maintenance. These advancements help operators improve service quality while also optimizing energy usage, thanks to the platform’s integration of low-power 7nm technology.

Key Points:

  • 50G PON delivers 40x higher speed and lower latency than gigabit services.
  • Embedded AI/ML improves operational efficiency and reduces cloud storage costs.
  • AI/ML algorithms support applications like 5G small cell deployment, anomaly detection, and network self-healing.
  • Coexists with GPON and XGS-PON on the same optical network for flexible migration.
  • Offers a 35-40% power savings over previous solutions.

“Broadcom’s 50G PON solution enables telcos worldwide to future-proof their networks and cost-effectively deploy 50G fiber broadband to drive the next generation of applications,” said Rich Nelson, SVP and GM of the Broadband Video Group at Broadcom.
