Ciena reported a 23.6% year-over-year increase in revenue for its fiscal second quarter ended May 3, 2025, reaching $1.13 billion, up from $910.8 million in the same period last year. The growth was driven by strong global demand for high-speed optical and network infrastructure, particularly from AI and cloud deployments.

GAAP net income for the quarter was $9 million, or $0.06 per share, reversing a loss of $16.8 million last year. On an adjusted basis, net income reached $60.7 million, or $0.42 per share, compared to $39.4 million and $0.27 per share in Q2 FY2024. Adjusted EBITDA rose 36% year-over-year to $116.7 million. Operating margin improved to 8.2% on a non-GAAP basis, while adjusted gross margin declined 2.5 percentage points to 41.0%.

Ciena’s Networking Platforms segment remained the primary revenue driver, contributing $866.3 million or nearly 77% of total revenue. Optical Networking revenue surged to $773.6 million, offsetting a dip in Routing and Switching. The company also reported gains in Global Services and Blue Planet software, with the latter nearly doubling to $28 million. Ciena repurchased 1.2 million shares for $84.3 million during the quarter and reported $1.35 billion in cash and investments.

  • Q2 FY2025 revenue: $1.13 billion (+23.6% YoY)
  • GAAP EPS: $0.06; Adjusted EPS: $0.42
  • Adjusted EBITDA: $116.7 million (+36% YoY)

  • Two customers contributed 23.9% of total revenue
  • Cash from operations: $156.9 million
  • Headcount: 8,819
  • Cash and investments: $1.35 billion

“Our strong fiscal second quarter results demonstrate our continued global leadership in high-speed connectivity with growing momentum across all of our business segments,” said Gary Smith, president and CEO of Ciena. “With accelerating demand driven by cloud and AI, our performance is validating the durability of a positive network infrastructure spending environment.”
