Coherent Corp. (NYSE: COHR) introduced a new generation of polarization-maintaining optical fiber designed to advance high-performance fiber laser systems, particularly narrow-linewidth and single-frequency 1550 nm amplifiers used in long-range LIDAR, wind energy, and air-traffic sensing. The new fiber, designated PLMA-EYDF-25P/300-XPH-11FA, combines a larger mode effective area with enhanced polarization-maintaining properties to suppress nonlinear effects and boost power scalability.
The product delivers improved pointing stability and low 1 µm amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise. When used with its matched passive fiber, PLMA-GDF-25/300, the system achieves superior beam quality and polarization extinction ratio. These capabilities make it suitable for demanding applications in quantum technology, high-precision materials processing, medical laser systems, and scientific research, addressing a key industry need for scalable, high-performance 1550 nm fiber lasers.
The PLMA fiber incorporates Coherent’s proprietary doped core materials and advanced waveguide design to achieve both reliability and manufacturability at scale.
