Colt Trials Real-Time Smart Path Routing via NaaS

Colt Technology Services has initiated a proof of concept for its new “Smart Path” feature, enabling businesses to define preferred packet network routes in near-real time via Colt’s Network as a Service (NaaS) platform. The trial, announced July 2, is being conducted with a global media customer aiming to optimize live-stream event delivery. By eliminating traditional manual routing processes, Smart Path promises faster provisioning, lower latency, and enhanced network resilience for critical applications.

Smart Path lets users select routes based on strategic goals such as latency optimization, geographic sovereignty, and sustainability. Customers can choose subsea routes for redundancy, restrict traffic to specific regions for compliance, and gain visibility into the carbon emissions associated with their chosen network paths. These features are accessed directly through Colt’s NaaS user interface, which enables real-time orchestration and dynamic changes to bandwidth and contract terms.

Colt, which introduced its On Demand NaaS platform in 2017, continues to expand the platform’s capabilities. The company now offers access to 32,000 Colt-connected buildings, over 275 cloud PoPs, and 130,000 fibre-connected sites globally. Smart Path will be available to customers by late 2025.

“Just as we can click and activate compute power and storage in the public cloud, businesses should be able to choose their network routes with the same level of ease, autonomy and simplicity,” said Peter Coppens, VP of Infrastructure and Connectivity Solutions at Colt.
