Comcast has unveiled Janus, a new initiative leveraging cloud and AI/ML technologies to transform its core network, enhancing Internet performance and reliability for over 63 million locations nationwide. By virtualizing its core network, Comcast aims to improve speed and reliability, enabling faster, more responsive services for high-demand activities such as 4K streaming, videoconferencing, VR gaming, etc.

Janus replaces traditional hardware-based routing and transport functions with advanced cloud and AI-powered solutions, delivering self-healing capabilities that minimize outages and optimize network efficiency. Initial trials are underway in Atlanta, with a full rollout expected in 2025.

Janus allows Comcast to better manage data traffic through edge cloud platforms, ensuring faster scaling and lower latency for streaming live sports and other bandwidth-heavy applications. The initiative also supports Comcast’s environmental goals by utilizing power-efficient, virtualized platforms that reduce the company’s carbon footprint. In collaboration with cloud networking company DriveNets and white box hardware provider UfiSpace, Janus integrates disaggregated, pluggable optics from multiple vendors to drive greater performance and reduce costs.

The new network infrastructure, designed to support future data demands, positions Comcast as one of the first operators to virtualize and disaggregate the core of its transport network, improving flexibility, reliability, and scalability for Xfinity and Comcast Business customers.

• Initiative: Janus network virtualization

• Technologies: Cloud, AI/ML, edge compute, virtualization, digital optics

• Benefits: Faster speeds, enhanced reliability, lower latency, automated self-healing functions

• Environmental impact: Supports carbon-neutral goal by 2035 with power-efficient platforms

• Partners: DriveNets for network cloud software, UfiSpace for white box hardware

• Rollout: Initial trials in Atlanta, full deployment by 2025

“Data usage continues to skyrocket at unprecedented rates, primarily due to the rapid increase in streaming high-quality live sports,” said Elad Nafshi, Chief Network Officer, Comcast. “Janus builds upon years of investment and innovation to maximize our network performance and will be a gamechanger for our customers, our business, and the environment.”
