Comcast Scales Disaggregated Networking Nationwide with DriveNets

Comcast is taking a bold step in rearchitecting its core network by expanding its Janus initiative nationwide, deploying DriveNets’ disaggregated Network Cloud platform to virtualize and automate its transport network with AI at the center. The project, initially piloted in Atlanta in 2024, will virtualize key functions of Comcast’s core infrastructure—replacing legacy monolithic systems with a software-defined, cloud-native architecture that leverages AI and machine learning to optimize network performance, boost reliability, and improve operational efficiency.

DriveNets’ Network Cloud disaggregates hardware from software, allowing Comcast to dynamically scale its network and introduce AI-driven automation to manage traffic flows more intelligently and efficiently. By embedding AI-powered self-healing and fault management capabilities, Comcast will streamline troubleshooting, reduce manual intervention, and accelerate time-to-market for new services across both its Xfinity and Comcast Business networks. The transformation will also reduce the energy and space footprint of network facilities, supporting Comcast’s sustainability and cost-efficiency objectives.

As AI and streaming continue to drive record-breaking bandwidth demand, the Janus platform will position Comcast to meet surging traffic volumes with faster, more agile infrastructure. Virtualizing the network core not only enhances resiliency and scalability but also paves the way for AI-optimized service delivery in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

• Comcast scales Janus initiative nationwide, virtualizing its core transport network using DriveNets’ disaggregated Network Cloud.

• Software-defined architecture separates hardware from software to enable AI-powered automation and dynamic scaling.

• AI capabilities include self-healing, fault detection, and optimization across Comcast’s broadband and business networks.

• The platform will improve reliability and reduce latency for applications like live streaming and AI workloads.

• Janus will help reduce the physical and power footprint of Comcast’s network facilities.

“The five biggest moments ever on our network happened in the final six weeks of 2024,” said Elad Nafshi, Chief Network Officer, Comcast. “Expanding the Janus trial across our footprint will transform how we manage the flow of Internet traffic to and from customers to maximize network performance, reliability, and efficiency.”

  • Comcast’s Janus architecture is a transformative initiative designed to modernize its core network infrastructure through virtualization, disaggregation, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI). Initially trialed in Atlanta in September 2024, Janus decouples traditional hardware from software functions, utilizing cloud-based management and standardized white-box hardware to deliver greater flexibility and scalability. The architecture incorporates AI and machine learning to provide real-time telemetry, proactive network monitoring, and self-healing capabilities, significantly enhancing network reliability and operational responsiveness. Additionally, Janus leverages edge cloud technologies, enabling key network functions to operate closer to end-users, thus minimizing latency and optimizing performance for applications requiring rapid data processing, such as live streaming and gaming.
