CoreSite has completed a major infrastructure upgrade at the One Wilshire® building in Los Angeles, one of the most interconnected facilities in the world and home to the company’s LA1 data center. The project included installing a new enterprise-class generator plant and upgrading electrical systems to provide enhanced redundancy and reliability. One Wilshire hosts over 300 networks and carries an estimated one-third of all trans-Pacific internet traffic, making the upgrade critical to supporting hybrid IT environments and growing interconnection requirements.
The work was conducted in a high-risk environment, with CoreSite maintaining 100% uptime for all customers throughout the process. Additional switchgear and power equipment were installed without interrupting operations, a challenge given the building’s role as a key West Coast carrier hotel. CoreSite operates three data centers in Los Angeles—LA1 within One Wilshire, LA2, and LA3—with LA3 certified under the NVIDIA DGX-Ready Data Center program for AI, machine learning, and other high-density workloads.
According to CoreSite’s 2025 State of the Data Center Report, only 19% of IT leaders say their colocation provider offers interconnection to multiple cloud platforms, underscoring the strategic importance of facilities like One Wilshire. The LA campus serves a wide range of customers, including carriers, enterprises, CSPs, and media companies, providing low-latency, secure, and scalable connectivity options across its facilities.

“Carrier hotels like One Wilshire play a key role in meeting enterprises’ interconnection needs, as they’re the central point for so many networks and carriers – and that’s not a capability you find in a lot of today’s purpose-built data centers,” said Anthony Hatzenbuehler, Senior Vice President of Operations at CoreSite.

One Wilshire’s reputation as one of the most connected buildings in the world is rooted in its unique history and location. Built in 1966 as a standard office tower, it transformed in the late 1980s and 1990s into the premier “carrier hotel” on the West Coast as telecom deregulation, fiber optic build-outs, and rising internet demand created a need for neutral interconnection points. Its position in downtown Los Angeles made it the logical aggregation hub for submarine cable systems landing in California and long-haul terrestrial networks linking major U.S. markets.
By the early 2000s, One Wilshire had become the primary meet-me point for international and domestic carriers in the Pacific region, hosting hundreds of providers in a dense, fiber-rich environment. Today, it is estimated that up to a third of all internet traffic between the U.S. and Asia flows through the building’s meet-me rooms, making it mission-critical for trans-Pacific data exchange. The facility’s high concentration of carriers, subsea cable operators, and cloud on-ramps creates unmatched network diversity and redundancy compared to typical colocation sites.
One Wilshire is owned by GI Partners, a private equity firm that specializes in technology-advantaged real estate and data infrastructure investments. GI Partners acquired the building in July 2013 from Hines Real Estate Investment Trust for approximately $437.5 million. Over 300 networks and carriers operate within the building.
