ECOC24: Coherent Launches Uncooled Dual-Chip 980 nm Laser

Coherent Corp. has introduced a new uncooled dual-chip 980 nm micro-pump laser designed for ultra-compact optical amplifiers, delivering a powerful 2×400 mW output. This laser, housed in a compact 3-pin module, is optimized for next-generation coherent transceivers used in data center interconnects, as well as single-channel and bidirectional amplifiers in metro and long-haul networks. With its space-efficient design and minimal power consumption of less than 2W, it supports applications that require high-performance amplification in power- and space-constrained environments, operating effectively across a wide temperature range from -20 to 85 degrees Celsius.

The new uncooled dual-chip micro-pump laser addresses the growing demand for energy-efficient solutions in modern communications networks by eliminating the need for traditional cooling systems, reducing the total power consumption, and lowering the cost of ownership. The device also features wavelength stabilization via an internal fiber grating and is equipped with a reduced-clad, bend-insensitive 80 µm single-mode fiber capable of supporting a 5 mm bending radius, all within a compact 10 mm x 4.4 mm footprint. Coherent has built on its long history of leadership in uncooled pump laser technology to offer this new solution that is set to enhance the efficiency and compactness of optical amplifiers for next-gen networks.

Coherent plans to have the uncooled dual-chip micro-pump laser in full production by Q1 2025, with samples currently available for testing. This new innovation provides network operators with the tools to reduce power consumption and shrink the footprint of optical amplification embedded in high-speed pluggable coherent transceivers.

Key points:

• Product: Uncooled dual-chip 980 nm micro-pump laser

• Output: 2×400 mW, <2W power consumption

• Applications: Data center interconnects, metro and long-haul networks, compact optical amplifiers

• Features: Wavelength stabilization, bend-insensitive fiber, ultra-compact 10 mm x 4.4 mm footprint

• Availability: Samples available now, full production by Q1 2025

“Our industry-first high-power uncooled dual-chip micro-pump laser enables customers and network operators to significantly shrink footprint and reduce power consumption,” said Dr. Simon Loten, Vice President, Pump Laser Division at Coherent.
