ECOC24: Coherent’s L-Band 800G QSFP-DD Transceiver

Coherent Corp. introduced an L-band 800 Gbps coherent pluggable transceiver in a QSFP-DD form factor.

By shifting from C-band to L-band, network capacity can increase from 32 Tbps to 64 Tbps, doubling the available bandwidth for data-hungry applications like AI and machine learning. Historically, L-band support came from proprietary systems, but Coherent’s standardized 800G ZR/ZR+ module now opens the door for disaggregated systems within an open ecosystem.

The transceiver features high optical output power and integrates Coherent’s indium phosphide technology, allowing for better power, size, and performance compared to silicon photonics-based alternatives. It supports key applications, including 800 Gbps extended-reach, 600 Gbps, and 400 Gbps long-reach solutions, all critical for IP-over-DWDM use cases. This versatility ensures seamless integration with existing telecom infrastructure, boosting both capacity and performance without the need for additional equipment, resulting in cost reductions of over 400%.

Coherent predicts that its 800G L-band transceiver will fuel rapid market adoption, especially as L-band ROADM shipments have nearly doubled over the past year.

At ECOC 2024, Coherent will demonstrate the transceiver using a Juniper PTX10002-36QDD router, highlighting its potential to streamline IP-over-DWDM configurations. Customer sampling is slated to begin by Q4 2024.

• Coherent introduces L-band 800G QSFP-DD transceiver, doubling fiber capacity.

• Supports 800 Gbps extended-reach, 600 Gbps, and 400 Gbps long-reach applications.

• Reduces costs by over 400% by eliminating additional optical equipment.

• Demonstration in an IP-over-DWDM setup with Juniper Networks at ECOC 2024.
