ECOC25: Adtran Advances Open Networking

Adtran will showcase its FSP 3000 open line system (OLS) and 100ZR+/400ZRE coherent pluggables at the center of the OIF’s interoperability showcase next week at ECOC 2025 in Copenhagen. The live demo carried 100G, 400G and 800G signals across a 300km multi-span link using both Adtran and third-party hosts and OLS platforms. The setup underscored the role of disaggregated IPoDWDM architectures in simplifying operations and scaling for cloud and AI workloads.

Ahead of ECOC, Adtran also joined the OIF Plugfest, where its 100ZR+ and 400ZRE modules were validated for interoperability across a range of hosts and platforms. The pluggables, offering 0dBm output power and low energy consumption, demonstrated consistent performance across multi-vendor environments. Together, the Plugfest and the ECOC live demo showcased open networking at both the system and module level, highlighting operational resilience and flexible sourcing options for operators.

The FSP 3000 OLS supports rates up to 1.6Tbps and integrates features such as flexgrid and colorless ROADMs, bidirectional inline amplification, and automated monitoring with span equalization. At ECOC, the demonstration showed operators how multi-vendor ZR optics can deliver vendor-neutral scaling, service agility, and simplified turn-up in live deployments.

  • Adtran’s FSP 3000 OLS carried 100G–800G traffic over a 300km multi-span link in the OIF demo
  • 100ZR+ and 400ZRE coherent pluggables operated across both Adtran and third-party OLS
  • OIF Plugfest validated Adtran’s pluggables for multi-vendor interoperability across hosts
  • Features include flexgrid/colorless ROADMs, automated span equalization, and integrated monitoring
  • Solutions designed to support scaling up to 1.6Tbps with operational simplicity and energy efficiency

“Open optical networking is most effective when it empowers operators with flexibility and seamless integration,” said Ryan Schmidt, GM of optical transport at Adtran.

🌐 Analysis: Adtran’s role at ECOC 2025 reflects its deepening engagement in open optical ecosystems. By anchoring the OIF demo and validating its coherent pluggables in Plugfest testing, the company is positioning itself alongside competitors such as Ciena, Infinera, and Nokia, all of whom are advancing interoperability and pluggable roadmaps. The ability to demonstrate both live interoperability and lab validation strengthens operator confidence in adopting disaggregated optical architectures for AI and cloud scaling.
