Coherent Corp. will introduce major upgrades to its Multi-Rail technology platform at ECOC 2025, targeting hyperscale optical transport with new efficiency, scale, and performance enhancements.
The latest platform centers on a Dynamic Gain Equalizer (DGE) that integrates C and L bands into a single compact module. This doubles transmission bandwidth while reducing footprint by 20%, enabling operators to expand capacity without equivalent increases in rack space, power, or cooling requirements.
Coherent also advanced its Optical Channel Monitoring (OCM) technology, cutting scan times by 50% and supporting up to 32 monitoring points per module. This improvement allows faster provisioning and greater visibility across transport systems. Coherent said it is working with network equipment manufacturers to integrate the upgrades into transmission systems, with sampling planned for late 2026. A live demo of the platform is being presented at ECOC 2025, Booth C3124.
• New Dynamic Gain Equalizer (DGE) combines C and L bands in one module
• Doubles transmission bandwidth with 20% smaller footprint
• Enhanced Optical Channel Monitoring (OCM) halves scan times
• Up to 32 monitoring points per OCM module
• Sampling expected in late 2026, with live demo at ECOC25
“As demand for optical communications accelerates, Coherent continues to push the boundaries of scale and efficiency,” said Madhu Krishnaswamy, Senior Vice President – Telecommunication Transport at Coherent. “By combining our semiconductor and wavelength-management expertise, leveraging our unique technology platforms in advanced InP and GaAs semiconductor fabrication and our strong LCoS Wavelength Selective Switch and Dynamic Equalizer fabric, we are setting new benchmarks for bandwidth and power efficiency, all with in-house manufacturing for unmatched reliability.”
🌐 Analysis: Coherent’s new Multi-Rail advances underline the industry’s push to extract more value out of C+L band architectures while optimizing space and power. Competitors such as Ciena, Infinera, and Nokia have also invested in C+L band strategies, but Coherent’s integration of DGE and OCM into compact, efficient modules highlights a focus on manufacturable, system-ready components. The timeline for sampling in 2026 aligns with expected upgrades in line systems and ROADMs as operators prepare for AI-driven traffic growth and extended spectrum use.
