The European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC25) kicks off today in Copenhagen, bringing together global leaders in photonics, networking, and data infrastructure. Running from September 29 to October 2, the event is Europe’s largest optical communications gathering and a critical stage for unveiling new technologies shaping the future of connectivity and AI infrastructure. Converge Digest has been tracking early announcements ahead of the show and will provide ongoing coverage throughout the week.

In the run-up to ECOC25, companies announced major product introductions and technical milestones. Coherent detailed next-generation 2D VCSEL and photodiode arrays for short-reach AI interconnects, began sampling 400 mW continuous-wave lasers for co-packaged optics, and unveiled a 100G ZR QSFP28 for bi-directional applications. The LPO MSA group finalized its 400G-FR4-LPO specification for linear pluggable optics, while NEC introduced a 25G SFP28 BiDi transceiver capable of 80 km transmission. Huawei outlined its vision for submarine-terrestrial synergy at Submarine Networks World 2025, and Ayar Labs partnered with Alchip to advance co-packaged optics for AI datacenters.

This week’s ECOC25 program features keynote addresses and workshops on AI-driven infrastructure, co-packaged optics, subsea systems, and sustainable photonics manufacturing. Attendees can expect deep dives into topics such as linear pluggable optics adoption, copper replacement with optical I/O, and innovations in coherent transmission. With more than 300 exhibitors and hundreds of technical papers, ECOC25 is set to provide a broad look at the industry’s roadmap.
