Equinix and BT Group have announced a €59 million agreement for Equinix to acquire BT’s data center business in Ireland. The deal includes two well-established, carrier-neutral facilities located in CityWest and Ballycoolin, Dublin, encompassing approximately 150,000 square feet of space. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2025, pending competition and regulatory approvals. This move aligns with BT’s asset-light strategy, which focuses on partnering with global-scale organizations rather than owning and operating data centers directly.
Shay Walsh, Managing Director of BT Ireland, emphasized that the deal builds on an existing partnership with Equinix, allowing BT to sharpen its focus on core strengths like cloud, networking, and security. Peter Lantry, Managing Director of Equinix Ireland, highlighted the acquisition as a strategic expansion of Equinix’s footprint in Ireland, complementing its significant contribution to the Irish economy and further enhancing its global interconnection services. Equinix will work closely with BT in the coming months to ensure a smooth transition for customers and staff while integrating the facilities into its global network.
