Equinix has opened its first International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Chennai, India, marking a major expansion beyond its Mumbai campus. The new CN1 facility, located on nearly six acres in Siruseri, Tamil Nadu, positions Chennai as a critical hub for digital infrastructure in India, with proximity to expected submarine cable landing sites. This development comes as India accelerates its role in global AI adoption, cloud services, and digital transformation.
The CN1 data center launched with an initial investment of $69 million and capacity for 800 cabinets in its first phase, with plans to expand to 4,250 cabinets. Built to support high-density, compute-intensive workloads, CN1 features AI-ready liquid cooling capabilities and 99.999% uptime design. The facility offers Equinix interconnection services, including Equinix Fabric, enabling enterprises to build hybrid multicloud networks and reduce latency when connecting with providers across India and beyond.
Equinix already serves more than 300 customers in India, including major cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud. Its three-facility Mumbai campus has become a cornerstone for interconnection and cloud services in the country, and CN1 now extends these capabilities to Tamil Nadu’s fast-growing digital economy. Globally, Equinix operates over 270 data centers in 36 countries, including more than 60 in Asia-Pacific.
