Ericsson has completed the formation of Aduna as a 50:50 joint venture with twelve of the world’s largest communications service providers (CSPs). The company, which has been operational since its launch in September 2024, aims to aggregate and commercialize network Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for developers globally. Ericsson holds 50 percent of the equity, while AT&T, Bharti Airtel, Deutsche Telekom, KDDI, Orange, Reliance Jio, Singtel, Telefónica, Telstra, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Vodafone collectively own the other 50 percent.
Aduna is positioning itself as a global enabler of network APIs by bringing together CSP assets, developer ecosystems, system integrators, CPaaS providers, and ISVs. Ericsson contributed its global network platform, which serves as the foundation for Aduna’s offerings. The joint venture has already built an ecosystem that includes Google Cloud, Microsoft, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Sinch, Vonage, Infobip, and multiple CSP alliances such as Bridge Alliance and Enstream.
With Anthony Bartolo serving as CEO, Aduna will now accelerate efforts to grow developer adoption of network APIs and expand its partner base. The company is encouraging additional CSPs and technology providers to join in order to broaden the reach and impact of programmable telecom capabilities across industries.
• Aduna is now a 50:50 JV between Ericsson and twelve CSPs
• Founding CSP shareholders include AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone, T-Mobile, Telefónica, Orange, Telstra, Bharti Airtel, KDDI, Reliance Jio, Singtel, and Deutsche Telekom
• Ecosystem partners already include e&, SoftBank, NTT DOCOMO, Bouygues Telecom, Google Cloud, Microsoft, Vonage, Sinch, Infobip, Tech Mahindra, and Wipro
• Ericsson contributed its global network platform as part of the venture
• Goal is to accelerate developer adoption of network APIs worldwide
Anthony Bartolo, CEO of Aduna, said: “The closing of the transaction is another important step for Aduna. In just ten months we have built an impressive ecosystem comprising the biggest names in telecoms and the wider ICT industry. The closing provides renewed motivation for Aduna to accelerate the adoption of network APIs by developers on a global scale.”
🌐 Why it Matters: The establishment of Aduna formalizes an unprecedented alignment between Ericsson and leading CSPs around network APIs. This joint venture could be a decisive step in making telecom network functions accessible to developers at scale, creating new revenue streams for operators while supporting next-generation applications such as immersive communications, IoT, and AI-driven services. If successful, Aduna could become a central hub for network programmability,
The venture aims to streamline access to advanced network capabilities, enabling developers to innovate more easily across different telecom networks. By providing common APIs to developers, the venture is expected to drive new applications that can work across any network, offering a significant boost to digital service innovation.
Historically, the advanced features of mobile networks have been difficult for developers to access, largely due to the fragmented nature of telecom capabilities across multiple providers. This new venture will address that issue by offering a unified platform for APIs, making it simpler for developers to integrate and utilize network functionalities. Applications in areas such as fraud prevention, device status checking for streaming services, and many others are expected to emerge from this initiative.
Aduna will provide APIs to a wide array of developer ecosystems, including Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) providers, System Integrators (SIs), and Independent Software Vendors (ISVs). The platform will build on the industry-wide CAMARA APIs and is designed to be open and non-discriminatory to foster maximum innovation.
