Ericsson and Vodafone have entered a five-year strategic partnership to modernize Vodafone’s radio access network (RAN) infrastructure across six key markets using programmable and AI-driven technologies. Under the agreement, Ericsson will serve as Vodafone’s exclusive RAN vendor in Ireland, the Netherlands, and Portugal, and as a primary vendor in Germany, Romania, and Egypt.
The modernization program will deploy Ericsson’s Open RAN–ready Massive MIMO radios, RAN Compute platforms, and 5G Advanced software to lay the foundation for 5G Standalone networks. These systems will deliver performance-based connectivity for both consumer and enterprise services, enabling differentiated service levels and improved operational efficiency. The rollout also includes the Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform and a suite of AI-driven rApps to automate network optimization and enhance energy efficiency. Germany will be the first country to implement these AI-driven automation tools beginning in Q4 2025.
This agreement deepens the long-standing relationship between Ericsson and Vodafone while positioning Vodafone to leverage its Aduna network API venture to expose network capabilities to developers. This will allow for the creation of programmable connectivity experiences and new service models. Ericsson said the partnership represents a key milestone toward building autonomous networks and driving the next generation of telecom innovation.
• Ericsson becomes Vodafone’s sole RAN vendor in Ireland, the Netherlands, and Portugal
• Deployment includes Massive MIMO radios, RAN Compute, and 5G Advanced RAN software
• Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform and AI-powered rApps to optimize performance and energy use
• Germany to lead rollout of automation and AI-driven RAN management in Q4 2025
• Vodafone aims to open new developer opportunities through network APIs via Aduna
“This strategic partnership with Ericsson marks a significant step in our network evolution journey,” said Alberto Ripepi, Chief Network Officer at Vodafone Group. “By modernizing our network and embracing automation and AI, we’re building the foundation for the next wave of applications and services that will transform connectivity.”
🌐 Analysis: The deal cements Ericsson’s dominance as a European RAN supplier amid increased competition from Nokia and new Open RAN entrants. It reinforces Vodafone’s multi-year effort to create a more programmable and autonomous network fabric across its markets while balancing cost efficiency and innovation. The inclusion of Aduna highlights Vodafone’s ambition to monetize its 5G Standalone network via API-driven services—an emerging trend echoed by Deutsche Telekom, Telefónica, and AT&T in their developer platform strategies.
