EXA Infrastructure has partnered with FiberSense to deploy its DigitalAsset™ monitoring and protection service across EXA’s core fiber network in Italy. The collaboration marks a significant step in proactive fiber management, adding real-time sensing and AI-based analytics to protect one of Europe’s most critical network backbones.
FiberSense’s DigitalAsset™ converts existing optical fiber into a continuous array of environmental sensors capable of detecting disturbances such as excavation, construction, or seismic activity along fiber routes. By integrating this system, EXA gains real-time intelligence and situational awareness, allowing teams to mitigate risks before service disruptions occur. The deployment supports EXA’s strategy to enhance the resilience of its 166,000-kilometer (≈103,000-mile) network that spans 37 countries across Europe, North America, and the Middle East.
“Protecting our network and ensuring service continuity for our customers is paramount,” said Ciaran Delaney, COO of EXA Infrastructure. “By integrating FiberSense’s DigitalAsset technology, we gain a new layer of intelligence and situational awareness that lets us respond faster and prevent outages before they occur.”
• DigitalAsset™ uses vibration sensing and AI analytics to transform fiber into environmental sensors
• EXA’s Italian backbone will now feature 24/7 real-time monitoring and geolocation of incidents
• The system complements existing network management tools and automation layers
• The initiative supports EXA’s long-term commitment to secure, resilient European digital infrastructure
• FiberSense continues to expand its footprint in telecom, energy, and transportation monitoring
🌐 Analysis:
This deployment underscores a growing industry trend toward integrating distributed fiber sensing (DFS) into long-haul and metro networks for predictive maintenance and asset protection. EXA’s adoption of FiberSense technology follows similar initiatives by carriers seeking AI-assisted visibility into buried cable routes. The move also strengthens EXA’s leadership in operational automation and infrastructure resilience, aligning with its expansion strategy under I Squared Capital’s ownership.
