Ooredoo Group has partnered with Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) to develop the Fibre in Gulf (FIG) submarine cable, a major subsea infrastructure project that will connect Qatar, Oman, the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq. The system will provide low-latency, high-capacity connectivity between the Gulf region and Europe, supporting the increasing demands of hyperscalers, AI providers, data centers, businesses, and telecom operators.

The FIG cable will feature 24 fibre pairs with a total capacity of 720 Tbps, making it one of the largest submarine networks in the region. This initiative aligns with Ooredoo’s strategy to expand its digital infrastructure leadership, accelerate cloud adoption and AI-driven services, and strengthen network resilience. The company has also been advancing its presence in fintech, IoT, and GPU-based computing, becoming the first NVIDIA Cloud Partner in the region in 2024.

• Coverage: Seven GCC countries – Qatar, Oman, UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq

• Capacity: 24 fibre pairs, up to 720 Tbps

• Strategic partner: Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN)

• Key benefits: Low latency, enhanced security, high-speed connectivity

• Target users: Hyperscalers, AI providers, telecom operators, governments, data centers

• Expansion plans: Ooredoo Oman to land 2Africa Cable System in Barka and Salalah

“This historic project aligns with Ooredoo’s ambitious strategy to lead in digital infrastructure by expanding network capacity and interconnectivity across the GCC and beyond,” said Aziz Aluthman Fakhroo, Group CEO of Ooredoo. “This initiative positions Ooredoo as a key player in addressing the rapidly growing data demand between Asia and Europe.”
